Profhilo gets talked about as though it were a filler, and it is not. It does not add volume, it does not create structure, and it will not sharpen a jawline. What it does is different, and understanding that difference is the single most useful thing to know before you book.
Here is what Profhilo treatment actually is, what it realistically achieves, and the kind of skin it suits.
What is Profhilo?
Profhilo is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment that sits in a category called bio-remodelling. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in skin, where it holds water and keeps tissue plump and pliable. Levels fall with age, and skin loses the bounce and light-reflecting quality that comes with good hydration.
Rather than adding hyaluronic acid to a single area to build shape, Profhilo distributes a high concentration of it through the skin, where it hydrates from within and prompts the skin’s own repair activity.
Two things make it distinct from most injectables:
- Concentration. Each treatment delivers a high dose of pure hyaluronic acid, combining high and low molecular weight forms in one product
- No chemical cross-linking. Most dermal fillers use a cross-linking agent to hold the gel in a fixed shape. Profhilo uses a thermal manufacturing process instead, so it stays fluid and spreads through the tissue rather than sitting where it is placed
That spreading behaviour is the entire point. Profhilo is designed to treat an area of skin, not a feature of the face.
Profhilo is not a dermal filler
This is a common misunderstanding about Profhilo skin boosters.
| Dermal filler | Profhilo | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Adds volume and structure | Hydrates and remodels skin quality |
| Placement | Sits where it is injected | Spreads through the tissue |
| Visible effect | Changes shape and projection | Changes texture, glow and firmness |
| Best for | Lost volume, contour, definition | Crepey, dull or dehydrated skin |
If your concern is a flattened cheek or a lost jawline, filler is the relevant conversation, not Profhilo. If your concern is that your skin has gone slack, dull or papery, Profhilo is aimed squarely at that.
They are not mutually exclusive. Many patients have both, addressing different problems.
How it works on collagen and elastin
Beyond hydration, hyaluronic acid at this concentration acts as a stimulus. It encourages fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing structural proteins, to increase output of collagen and elastin.
That matters because those two proteins do different jobs. Collagen provides tensile strength and firmness. Elastin provides recoil, the ability of skin to spring back rather than stay creased. Most treatments marketed as collagen injections target firmness alone. Stimulating both is what produces the subtle tightening people report alongside the glow.
This is a gradual biological process, not an immediate one, which is why results build over weeks rather than appearing on the day.
Where it can be used
Profhilo is most commonly treated on the face, but it is well suited to areas where skin is thin and shows laxity early, and where surgical or volumising options are limited:
- Face, particularly cheeks and the lower face
- Neck, including horizontal lines and crepey texture
- Décolletage
- Hands
- Upper arms and above the knees
The neck and hands are where patients often notice the most obvious change, simply because those areas are rarely treated with anything else.
What the treatment involves
Profhilo is injected at a small number of defined points rather than across the whole area. These points are chosen because they allow the product to spread safely and evenly, and because they sit away from major vessels.
A typical course is two sessions spaced around four weeks apart. Some patients have a third session where skin quality is more significantly affected, which is a decision made at assessment rather than booked in advance.
The injections themselves take a few minutes. Most patients describe a brief sting. Small raised bumps appear at each injection point and usually settle within a few hours, occasionally by the following day. Bruising is possible, as with any injectable.
You can return to normal activity immediately. For the first 24 hours we advise avoiding strenuous exercise, excessive sun exposure and makeup. Swap exfoliants for gentle, soothing skincare while your skin settles.
What results to expect, and when
Results are progressive. Hydration is often noticeable within a week or two of the first session, but the collagen and elastin response takes longer, and most patients see the full effect around four to six weeks after the second session.
What patients typically report:
- Skin that looks better hydrated and reflects light more evenly
- Improved texture, particularly crepey skin on the neck and around the mouth
- A modest firming effect
What it does not do:
- Lift sagging tissue. Significant laxity needs a different approach
- Fill lines caused by volume loss
- Replace sun protection or a sensible skincare routine
Effects are generally reported to last in the region of six months, with maintenance sessions after that. Longevity varies between individuals depending on skin condition, age, lifestyle and sun exposure, so treat any figure as typical rather than promised.
What Profhilo costs
Profhilo is priced at £250 per vial at AMAR Aesthetics. A standard initial treatment uses two vials.
Larger areas, or treating the face and neck together, may require more product. Your practitioner will confirm exactly how much you need at consultation, along with the cost, before anything is booked.
Who it suits
Profhilo tends to suit patients who:
- Have noticed skin quality declining rather than facial shape changing
- Want a subtle result rather than a visible intervention
- Have crepey skin on the neck, décolletage or hands
- Are in their thirties or beyond, when natural hyaluronic acid production has begun to drop
- Have had filler and are happy with their shape but not their skin
Who it does not suit
It is not the right treatment if:
- Your main concern is volume loss or contour
- You have marked skin laxity that needs surgical or energy-based treatment
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have an active skin infection or inflammatory condition in the treatment area
- You have a known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid products
Anyone with an autoimmune condition, a bleeding disorder or a history of keloid scarring should raise it at consultation so suitability can be assessed properly.
How it compares with other anti-ageing injectables
Injectable treatments marketed under the anti-ageing heading do quite different things, and choosing between them starts with identifying the actual problem.
- Botulinum toxin reduces movement, so it addresses lines created by muscle activity, typically on the upper face
- Dermal filler adds volume where tissue has been lost
- Skin boosters, including Profhilo improve the condition of the skin itself
- Polynucleotide and mesotherapy treatments, such as NCTF deliver nutrients and stimulate repair, and are sometimes used alongside or instead of Profhilo depending on skin type
None of these is better than the others in the abstract. They treat different things, and the reason we assess before recommending is that the right answer depends on what is actually happening in your skin.
Frequently asked questions
Does Profhilo hurt? Most patients describe a brief sting at each injection point. Because there are relatively few points, the treatment is short.
How many sessions will I need? A standard course is two, around four weeks apart. Your practitioner will confirm at assessment whether a third is appropriate.
How much does Profhilo cost? Profhilo is £250 per vial, and a standard initial treatment uses two vials. Exact quantity is confirmed at consultation.
Can I have it with filler or toxin? Yes, and many patients do. Timing is usually staggered, which we will plan at consultation.
Is there any downtime? No meaningful downtime. Small bumps at the injection points settle within hours, and bruising is possible but not the norm.
Is Profhilo safe? Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the body and Profhilo has an established safety record when administered by a trained practitioner. Every treatment carries some risk, which we go through at consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Whether Profhilo is the right treatment depends on what your skin is actually doing, which is not something that can be established online. At AMAR Aesthetics we assess skin condition, discuss what you want to change, and recommend accordingly, including telling you when a different treatment would serve you better.
