The honest answer is no, not completely. Anyone promising total removal is overselling, and it is worth knowing that before you spend money on anything.
The useful answer is that stretch marks can often be improved substantially, sometimes to the point where they are difficult to notice, and that how much improvement is realistic depends almost entirely on what type of stretch mark you have and how old it is.
Here is what a stretch mark actually is, why that matters for treatment, what genuinely works, and what does not.
What a Stretch Mark Actually Is
A stretch mark is a scar. Not a surface mark, not a pigmentation issue, but a genuine scar in the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin.
It forms when skin is stretched faster than the collagen and elastin within it can adapt, during pregnancy, growth spurts, rapid weight change or muscle gain. The fibres tear, the skin heals as it does with any injury, and the repaired tissue has a different structure and texture to the skin around it.
That is why creams have limited effect. The damage sits below the surface, and topical products applied to the epidermis largely do not reach it. It is also why the goal of treatment is remodelling rather than removal. You are rebuilding collagen in scarred tissue, not lifting a mark off the skin.
Red Ones and White Ones Are Not the Same Problem
This is the single most important distinction, and it is the one most people have never been told.
Striae rubrae, the red or purple stage. New stretch marks are red, pink or purple because there is still active blood supply and inflammation in the healing tissue. At this stage the skin is still remodelling and is far more responsive to treatment. Results are typically better and need fewer sessions.
Striae albae, the white or silver stage. Over months to years, stretch marks mature, lose their colour and become pale, flat or slightly indented. The tissue has settled into its final scarred state. These still respond to treatment, but improvement is more gradual, needs more sessions, and the realistic outcome is a meaningful reduction in visibility rather than a return to normal skin.
If your stretch marks are still red, treating them sooner rather than later genuinely changes what is achievable. If they are already white, treatment is still worthwhile, but the expectation needs setting differently.
What Does Not Work Particularly Well
It is worth being direct about this, because a great deal of money is spent here.
- Cocoa butter, bio oil and similar topical products. Evidence for prevention or treatment of established stretch marks is weak. They will keep skin moisturised, which is not nothing, but they will not remodel dermal scarring.
- Home dermarollers. Depth is too limited to affect dermal scar tissue, and there is an infection risk.
- Most over-the-counter creams making removal claims. If a cream could remodel dermal collagen, it would be a licensed medicine, not a cosmetic.
Topical retinoids have shown some effect on early stretch marks in studies, though they are unsuitable in pregnancy and should only be used on medical advice.
What Does Work
Treatments that reach the dermis and stimulate collagen remodelling are where the evidence sits. In practice that means energy-based treatment rather than anything topical.
Laser treatment works by delivering controlled energy into the scarred tissue, prompting the body to lay down new collagen and gradually improving texture, colour and the depth of the indentation. Radiofrequency microneedling works on the same principle through a different mechanism, combining controlled micro-injury with heat delivered at depth. Which is more appropriate depends on your skin type, the stage of the stretch marks and where on the body they are.
Our page on laser treatment for stretch marks sets out how the treatment itself works and what a course involves.
Results build over a course of sessions rather than appearing after one. Improvement continues for several months after the final treatment as collagen remodelling completes, so the outcome should not be judged too early.
What Is Realistic
A well-planned course on red or early stretch marks can produce substantial improvement, often making them considerably less noticeable. On mature white stretch marks, expect a meaningful but partial improvement in texture and visibility rather than elimination.
Several factors affect the outcome and should be discussed honestly at consultation: how long the marks have been present, how wide and deep they are, where they are on the body, your skin type, and whether your weight is currently stable. Treating during ongoing weight change or before a planned pregnancy is usually not advised, because the underlying cause is still active.
Skin type also affects which treatments are safe to use, as some energy-based options carry a higher risk of pigment change in deeper skin tones. Proper assessment is not a formality here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will stretch marks ever go away on their own? They fade. Red ones typically become white or silver over one to two years and become less obvious, but the underlying scar remains.
Is it too late to treat old stretch marks? No, but expectations should be set differently. Mature stretch marks respond more slowly and need more sessions than new ones.
How many sessions will I need? It varies considerably with the stage, size and location of the marks. This is estimated at consultation rather than quoted in advance.
Can stretch marks be prevented? Partly. Keeping weight change gradual helps, and genetics play a significant role that no product overcomes. Prevention claims on creams should be treated sceptically.
Is treatment safe on all skin tones? Treatment options need matching to your skin type, as the risk of pigment change is higher in deeper tones with some modalities. This is assessed before any treatment is recommended.
